Product: Medical device for the home consumer

Situation

Acme Medical Device Inc. recently developed a handheld device for the consumer market. The product analyzes and reports blood hormone levels to the user. Acme just finished testing the English version of the device and is preparing for a simultaneous product launch in the U.S., Europe, and China.

We have 12 weeks before the product is scheduled for release at a product launch meeting with overseas sales and marketing staff.

Because the product is brand new, we assist Acme in coordinating in-country review of the localization (by interfacing directly with their overseas market staff). Though 12 weeks is an ample timeline for translation and testing, the project team must be well organized and disciplined in executing terminology and in-country reviews of the materials.

Project Scope

User Interface: 1,200 words, in XML format, for Palm OS.
Help File: 5,500 words, delivered in Word format.
Quick Start Guide: 1,300 words in Quark format.
User Manual: 12,000 words in FrameMaker.
Packaging materials: 500 words of packaging materials in Quark.
Testing: Functional testing of the UI on native operating systems required.
Timeline: Eight weeks for initial product localization, two weeks for localized product testing, followed by two weeks for in-country review and change implementation.

Process

During the project scheduling and estimating process, Acme and our localization team determine that, while our standard three-step translation process is more than adequate to meet timeline and quality expectations, the in-country review process presents some risks. Acme does not have time available for the extensive "fine tuning" of the translations. However, Acme has a strong reputation for quality in their foreign markets, so the product must be easy to use.

In order to maximize the quality of the translation and stay on the agreed-upon timeline, we take steps to integrate Acme's in-country review team early in the translation process. During the initial project kickoff, Acme and the Lingo project team review a list of expectations with each of Acme's target language reviewers. Following our development and translation of a product terminology list, we provide the list to the reviewer, who makes suggestions on their target language terminology. Our linguists use the accepted terminology throughout the translation of the product. Following translation and testing of the UI, each target-language, in-country reviewer is provided a demo of the translated product and has one week to perform a final verification of the translation. Following this final verification, the translation team has one week to make any essential changes.
